There's always so much going on behind the scenes of a contest - so much thats rarely or never seen at all. Infact, the majority of contests bore me to tears so I wander elsewhere for my fix. Hang in a carpark long enough or behind the tents and you'll pull off some interesting results. Steve Sherman (senior staff photog at SURFING mag) does it well and is probably more renowned for his moody surf portraits now than when his lens was pointed out to sea shooting action! Some of the best surf shots i've ever seen were from the 60's - randoms of guys hanging out and just being themselves. It's fair to say they've stood the test of time and to me that's what makes a lasting image...
